VIT B Syrah is a single vineyard wine grown on the west peak of the Helderberg.
The soils are derived from a mixture of Table mountain sandstone and
weathered granite. The 18 year old vineyard is farmed “dryland” and yields
approx 5-6 tonnes per hectare depending on seasonal conditions.
In the cellar, a great emphasis is placed on the minimum handling of fruit,
and no mechanical interventions with pumps, filters, etc. are used during
the fermentation. Fermentation by indigenous yeasts, lead to long,
stable maceration times of 10-14 days. The wine is matured in French oak
for 12 months prior to bottling.
The wine has a deep inky hue and smells of white pepper, plums, violets
and blueberries, a true expression of Helderberg Syrah. On the palette the
wine is rich with some savoury notes and a bright acidity gives the wine a
lovely freshness. A full-bodied palette with smooth, silky tannins and a
broad finish. A big, juicy yet elegant wine which works wonderfully with
red meats and osso bucco.
